STEM Summer Programs Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Welcome to the Dublin Partners in Education (DPIE) STEM Enrichment Academy frequently asked questions (FAQs) page. We are very pleased to bring our summer program to Dublin Unified School District students as well as the students in surrounding districts.
DPIE recommends high school credit for students who have demonstrated mastery of a course with a grade of A or B.
As local school and district policies vary, check with your school's counseling department if you hope to receive credit for a course. You must ask for and submit a form to your counseling department to request credit approval for high school courses taken elsewhere. The form for Dublin High School and Wells Middle School students taking high school courses is located below and must be turned in to Assistant Principal Lenni Velez. For students outside of Dublin, please select the appropriate link below, visit your school's website or contact your counseling department.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY STUDENT TO ENROLL IN THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
California does not fund summer courses for any California public school district. Without your fees, there could not be a STEM Enrichment Academy. The good news is that our fees are significantly lower than both private and public options in the Bay Area.
WHAT DOES THIS FEE COVER?
DPIE charges a fee for STEM Enrichment Academy to pay the costs for teacher and staff salaries, additional mandatory employer expenses, rental of facilities and classrooms, utility charges, maintenance, materials, supplies and other related costs.
WHAT METHOD OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
When you enroll online, you will be required to pay the enrollment fee with your credit card. Our website is secure and encrypted so you can feel safe in paying online. Your card number is not stored.
WHO CAN ENROLL IN THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
Students currently enrolled in grades 5-11 may enroll with us. Currently enrolled students in grades 5-7 may enroll in our middle school courses while those currently enrolled in grades 8-11 who meet the prerequisites for acceleration may enroll in our high school courses.
Middle school students who meet the prerequisites, may enroll in our high school math courses. Middle school students who complete math courses in our program will still need to meet the high school graduation requirement for math in their respective district.
HOW MUCH DOES THE ACADEMY COST?
We use incentive pricing to encourage parents to sign their children up for classes as early as possible. This gives us more time to identify and hire highly qualified teachers for our program
High School Enrollment Fees: Middle School Enrollment Fees:
$850 Per Class – Dec. 1 – 31 $300 Per Class – through March 31
$900 Per Class – Jan 1 – Feb. 28 $350 Per Class – beginning April 1
$950 Per Class – beginning March 1
In a survey of surrounding private schools our costs are at least 50% less than those charged by other institutions in the Tri-Valley.
MY CHILD HAS AN IEP OR A 504 PLAN. CAN I ENROLL IN THE ACADEMY?
If you have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan set up by a California school district, you can apply for the STEM Enrichment Academy. A copy of the IEP or 504 plan MUST be provided to DPIE so that we may determine if we can accommodate the student’s need in our programming. Enrollment in our program is provisional until we have made this determination.
HOW DO I ENROLL MY CHILD FOR THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
Enrollment in our program takes place online at www.dpie.org. Click on the Summer Programs tab on the main DPIE page and select the high school or middle school program. You will be redirected to the Academy home page where you will find the enrollment link. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis, as determined by the date stamp at the completion of enrollment. Seating is limited so please consider enrolling early. Once you have completed enrollment you will be notified as soon as the course is filled.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ENROLLING MY CHILD FOR DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY MATH COURSES?
Students must meet the prerequisites to qualify for any math courses offered by DPIE STEM Enrichment Academy. As an example, students must have successfully completed Algebra I before taking Geometry. Additionally, the STEM Enrichment Academy is an accelerated program and students should be strong students who come ready to work. It’s normal to expect 1-3 hours of homework each night, but some students report that it takes them longer to complete all assigned work.
IF A STUDENT PASSES A MATH COURSE IS HE/SHE ALLOWED TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
Students may advance to the next math level with a grade of B or better.
Because Algebra 1 is considered a foundational class for math, any Dublin students talking Algebra 1 in the STEM Enrichment program must achieve an 85% “B” or better upon completion of our math courses in order to advance to Geometry.
Dublin students taking other math courses during the summer must earn an A or B to move to the next math course.
Current 8th graders who have successfully completed Common Core Math 8 with an "A" or strong "B" may enroll in the STEM Enrichment Academy Algebra 1 program. Algebra 1 is a “foundational” course for all students and it is very important that only those students who are well prepared enroll in our accelerated 6-week program.
Students attending Dublin High School in the Fall who enroll in Algebra 1 must earn a solid B (85%) or better in order to advance to Geometry during the regular school year. DHS math teachers have learned through experience that students must achieve at the 85% standard to succeed at the next level. The 85% rule does not apply to students who attend school outside of the Dublin Unified School District.
*SRVUSD students, by your school board’s policy, are not allowed to take Algebra 1 classes outside of the SRVUSD school district in order to advance to Geometry. However, you may take the class to be exposed to the curriculum, but only students who are academically up to the challenge should enroll in Algebra 1.
Current 7th graders who have successfully completed Algebra 1 during 7th grade may enroll in DPIE Geometry classes over the summer. Students in the DUSD must earn an 85% or better to move to Geometry the following school year. Those students may need to provide their own transportation to & from Dublin High School in order to participate in the Geometry program during the school year.
According to Dublin School District Policy, Current 7th graders who have successfully completed Common Core Accelerated 7 in 7th grade may enroll in DPIE Algebra 1 courses for enrichment during the summer. Due to the importance of Algebra skills as a foundational math course, these students will be required to also take Algebra 1 for their 8th grade Math course. Parents of current 7th graders who pass Algebra 1 with an 85% or better would have to appeal to the district for possible placement in Geometry.
WHY ARE MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES NOT GRADED?
Middle school courses do not count towards high school graduation and are not added to college transcripts. All middle school courses are designed to be of high interest and geared towards enriching student learning and generating interest in higher level STEM courses at the high school level.
YOUR LITERATURE INDICATES THAT STEM ACADEMY COURSES MEET THE COLLEGE A-G REQUIREMENT, SO WHY ISN’T DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY LISTED ON THE A-G APPROVAL LIST?
All STEM Enrichment Academy courses meet the curriculum guidelines of the Dublin Unified School District. Transcripts are therefore generated by Dublin High School and Dublin High School is on the approved list for A-G requirements.
WHEN CAN I REGISTER MY STUDENT?
Students may begin enrollment on December 1, 2016 by going to the DPIE website at http://www.dpie.org and clicking on the enrollment button.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY STUDENT’S SCHEDULE AND ROOM ASSIGNMENT?
You will be advised by email as soon as your student has been confirmed in a full class. Schedules, a campus map & teacher assignments will be emailed at least a week before classes begin.
WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?
Since all teachers are hired based on demand for courses, we have a NO REFUND POLICY. We are a non-profit organization and cannot afford to subsidize the STEM Enrichment Academy, therefore, when you enroll your child, you are making a financial commitment to their education and the Academy. Refunds will only be given if a course does not fill.
WHAT IS THE ATTENDANCE POLICY?
All students MUST attend the first and last day of their assigned class. Any student not in attendance on the first day needs to receive prior approval from DPIE STEM Academy Administration for the absence or they will be dropped in favor of a student on the waiting list. Any student not available on the last day must make prior arrangements for testing or they will not pass the class and/or receive credit.
Excused absences must be agreed to in advance with Academy Administraion. Students are generally not allowed more than 1 ½ days of absence in any 3 week semester. Students are not allowed more than 3 days of absence when enrolled in a 6 week program without prior consent of Academy Administration. Two tardies equal one ½ day absence. It is very important that your student be on time and available for the full session to be successful at such an accelerated pace.
Each day in the STEM Enrichment Academy is the equivalent of one week of instruction in the regular school year. Students who miss class are not likely to be successful in the program.
HOW CAN I GET A COPY OF MY GRADE REPORT?
DUBLIN STUDENTS & PARENTS can simply go to Infinite Campus to see their grade at any time. The grade for the course will automatically be added to your child’s transcript if credit is earned unless you request that it not to be added.
NON-DUBLIN STUDENTS who go to school outside of the Dublin District will receive two transcripts via the mail at the completion of DPIE STEM Enrichment Academy’s summer program. One is for your records and a second sealed envelope can be given to your high school counseling department to be added to your transcript.
HOW DO I ORDER ADDITIONAL COPIES OF MY TRANSCRIPT?
If you are applying to multiple colleges you have two ways of getting additional transcripts.
- Order your transcripts at www.parchment.com by signing up with them to send your official transcripts electronically to over 8,000 destinations worldwide. Once you have signed up, you can sign in 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to send and track your transcript. DPIE student transcripts are issued by Dublin High School therefore you will look for and select Dublin High School when requesting a copy. Parchment charges a fee per transcript.
- Go to the Dublin High School website and download a transcript request form found under the "resources" pull down and send it to Dublin High School ℅ Lenni Velez. To find the form, go to the DHS website, click on resources, Form Directory, Student forms and you can print out the form from there, complete it and send it to DHS. There is a $5 fee charged by the school for each additional transcript and checks should be made out to Dublin High School.
HOW CAN I MONITOR MY CHILD’S PERFORMANCE IN THE CLASS?
All parents will be given access to the Parent Portal which will allow you to go online to monitor your child’s progress in the class. Your students ID and password to the Parent Portal will be sent home with our child during the first week of the Academy.
Additionally, each teacher will have an email address for you to address questions directly to the instructor.
MAY WE TAKE MORE THAN ONE CLASS AT A TIME THROUGH DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
High school students will only have the time to take one year-long course in our summer program. However, they are allowed to select a backup course in case their first choice does not fill.
Both high school and middle school students may sign-up for more than one semester course. These courses are taught in three week sessions and can be taken back to back. As an example, a high school student could sign up for Economics in session 1 and PE in session 2.
Middle School students can sign-up for 2 three week courses in both session 1 & 2. Middle school course will be offered from 8 – 10:20 a.m. & 10:40 a.m. – 1 p.m.
