STEM Summer Programs Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Welcome to the Dublin Partners in Education (DPIE) STEM Enrichment Academy frequently asked questions (FAQs) page. We are very pleased to bring our summer program to Dublin Unified School District. Please note that all DPIE high school courses are the same courses taught at Dublin High School and only students in the Dublin School District can receive A-G UC admission credit towards college admission.

Non-Dublin High School Students who attend school outside of the Dublin School District may participate in our program for exposure purposes, but will not be able to submit transcripts to their district for advancement purposes. Please note that some school districts allow students to “challenge” a course by successfully taking the course final assessment for a specific course. Students who successfully challenge a class in their home district may receive high school credit towards graduation in that district. You will need to check with your district to determine if they have a challenge process in place for their courses.

DPIE recommends high school credit for students who have demonstrated mastery of a course with a grade of A or B.

Required Form

You must submit a form to your counseling department to request credit approval for high school courses taken elsewhere. All Dublin students are required to complete an Alternative Credit Application (ACA) form and that form must be approved for student participation in ANY summer high school academic program. The ACA form for Dublin High, Wells & Fallon Middle School students can be downloaded below and must be approved by the DHS Counseling Department. Students will not receive credit for any high school summer course that has not received approval by Dublin counselors.

We have been notified by Dublin High administration that counselors at Dublin High will NOT approve summer school credit forms until the month of January after first semester grades have been uploaded into their system. This is after our first “Early Bird” pricing period in the month of December. They have recommended that only students who are confident they are earning an “A” or “strong B” should enroll during the month of December. We have been advised by Dublin High that approval won’t be an issue for students who are doing well, but approvals could be an issue for students who are not strong in their subject area.

Before enrolling your child, please be aware that DPIE has a strict “NO REFUND” policy in place so we recommend you only make the decision to enroll your child prior to receiving your counselor’s approval if you are confident they are doing “A” or “strong B” work in the specific subject area.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but it is important that we get an early start on hiring teachers so we get the best teachers possible for our program.

High School Enrollment Pricing Schedule:

$925 - December 1-31

$ 975 - Janauary 1 - February 28

$1,025 - March 1

Students applying for "credited" high school courses should verify they meet all prerequisites required prior to enrollment.

We hope the following Question & Answer series assists you to better understand our program and answer your questions.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY STUDENT TO ENROLL IN THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
California does not fund summer courses for any California public school district. Without your fees, there could not be a STEM Enrichment Academy. The good news is that our fees are significantly lower than both private and public options in the Bay Area.

WHAT DOES THE ENROLLMENT FEE COVER?
DPIE charges a fee for STEM Enrichment Academy to pay the costs for teacher and staff salaries, additional mandatory employer expenses, rental of facilities, textbooks and classrooms, utility charges, maintenance, materials, supplies and other related costs.

WHAT METHOD OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
When you enroll online, you will be required to pay the enrollment fee with your credit card. Our website is secure and encrypted so you can feel safe in paying online. Your card number is not stored.

IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE?
Yes, there is financial aid available to qualifying Dublin families.  Any family that qualifies for the National School Lunch program which provides free and reduced price nutritionally balanced lunches to students can receive financial assistance.
If you would like to know more about the National School Lunch Program and complete an online application, please click here http://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/index.php?page=lunchapps&sid=2203112030183753.  It will take a couple of days to determine if you qualify.  Upon notification of qualification for this program, please let us know.  Once we verify that you've qualified for the program, we will be able to let you know how much assistance you qualify for with us and provide you with a coupon code for Academy enrollment.

WHO CAN ENROLL IN THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
Students currently enrolled in grades 5-11 may enroll with us. Currently enrolled students in grades 5-7 may enroll in our middle school courses while those currently enrolled in grades 8-11 who meet the prerequisites for acceleration may enroll in our high school courses. Students taking high school courses must complete an Alternative Credit Application (ACA) form which you can download from this website and have it approved by the high school counselors in order to receive credit for any summer academic classes taken.

Middle school students who meet the prerequisites, may enroll in our high school math courses. Middle school students who complete math courses in our program will still need to meet the high school graduation requirement for math in their respective district.

MY CHILD HAS AN IEP OR A 504 PLAN. CAN I ENROLL IN THE ACADEMY?
If you have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan set up by a California school district, you can apply for the STEM Enrichment Academy. A copy of the IEP or 504 plan MUST be provided to DPIE so that we may determine if we can accommodate the student’s need in our programming. Enrollment in our program is provisional until we have made this determination.

HOW DO I ENROLL MY CHILD FOR THE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
Enrollment in our program takes place online at www.dpie.org. Click on the Summer Programs tab on the main DPIE page and select the high school or middle school program. You will be redirected to the Academy home page where you will find the enrollment link. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis, as determined by the date stamp at the completion of enrollment. Seating is limited so please consider enrolling early. Once you have completed enrollment you will be notified as soon as the course is filled.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ENROLLING MY CHILD FOR DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY MATH COURSES?
Students must meet the prerequisites to qualify for any math courses offered by DPIE STEM Enrichment Academy. As an example, students must have successfully completed Algebra I before taking Geometry. Additionally, the STEM Enrichment Academy is an accelerated program and students should be strong students who come ready to work.  It’s normal to expect 1-3 hours of homework each night, but some students report that it takes them longer to complete all assigned work.

IF A STUDENT PASSES A MATH COURSE IS HE/SHE ALLOWED TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
Students may advance to the next math level with a grade of B or better.

ALGEBRA 1 STUDENTS
Because Algebra 1 is considered a foundational class for math, any Dublin students taking Algebra 1 in the STEM Enrichment program must achieve an 85% “B” or better and earn the recommendation of their teacher upon completion of our Algebra 1 course in order to advance to Geometry.

Dublin students taking other math courses during the summer must earn an A or B to move to the next math course.

Students may choose to enroll in summer math programs for purposes of acceleration, preparing for the next level of mathematics, enrichment, or remediation.

The following guidelines are followed by the Dublin Unified School District for placement in summer courses:

Current Algebra I Students:
Students who have successfully completed Algebra 1 in middle school or high school may enroll in DPIE Geometry classes over the summer. Students may be recommended for an Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/Trigonometry course in the fall based on the summer Geometry grade.

Current Course 3 Students:
8th grade students who have successfully completed Course 3 with an “A” or “Strong B,” may enroll in DPIE Algebra 1 classes for credit over the summer. Students may be recommended for a Geometry course in the Fall if they earn an 85% or better in Algebra 1 and earn the teacher’s recommendation.

Current Course 2/3 Students:
Students who have successfully completed Course 2/3 may enroll in DPIE Algebra 1 courses during the summer. Students completing the summer course with an “A, A- or B+” will automatically be enrolled in Geometry for Fall. Students need to earn 85% or better in Algebra 1 and be recommended for Geometry by their teacher.

WHY ARE MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES NOT GRADED?
Middle school courses do not count towards high school graduation and are not added to college transcripts. All middle school courses are designed to be of high interest and geared towards enriching student learning and generating interest in higher level STEM courses at the high school level.

YOUR LITERATURE INDICATES THAT STEM ACADEMY COURSES MEET THE COLLEGE A-G REQUIREMENT, SO WHY ISN’T DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY LISTED ON THE A-G APPROVAL LIST?
All STEM Enrichment Academy courses meet the curriculum guidelines of the Dublin Unified School District. The Dublin School Board has passed a resolution, # 2016-17-32, allowing DPIE courses and grades to be added to Dublin High transcripts and therefore are approved and meet the A-G requirements for UC admission.  This process, known as "Principal's Certification" was created by the UC systems Admissions department in support of supplementary programs like ours.  UC recognizes that the DPIE Academy is accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools & Colleges) just like Dublin and we offer the same courses as offered by Dublin High School.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER MY STUDENT?
Students may begin enrollment on December 1, 2017 by going to the DPIE website at http://www.dpie.org and clicking on the enrollment button.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY STUDENT’S SCHEDULE AND ROOM ASSIGNMENT?
You will be advised by email as soon as your student has been confirmed in a full class. Schedules, a campus map & teacher assignments will be emailed at least a week before classes begin.

WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?
Since all teachers are hired based on demand for courses, we have a NO REFUND POLICY. We are a non-profit organization and cannot afford to subsidize the STEM Enrichment Academy, therefore, when you enroll your child, you are making a financial commitment to their education and the Academy. Refunds will only be given if a course does not fill.

This year, like most high schools in the Tri Valley, students must receive approval from the Dublin High Counseling department to take Summer courses for advancement purposes.  Students are required to turn in a  Alternative Credit Application form which can be downloaded from our website.  Unfortunately, counselors will not approve these forms until after 1st semester grades have been uploaded in January.  This is after our first “early bird” pricing discount period which is December 1 – 31st.  We have been advised by the high school administration that you should only risk enrolling in the December early bird period if you are confident your child is receiving an “A” or “B” in their subject area.  Students who are doing borderline work should wait until they receive counselor approvals before enrolling in the Academy.

WHAT IS THE ATTENDANCE POLICY?
All students MUST attend the first and last day of their assigned class. Any student not in attendance on the first day needs to receive prior approval from DPIE STEM Academy Administration for the absence or they will be dropped in favor of a student on the waiting list. Any student not available on the last day must make prior arrangements for testing or they will not pass the class and/or receive credit.

Excused absences must be agreed to in advance with Academy Administration. Students are generally not allowed more than 1 ½ days of absence in any 3 week semester. Students are not allowed more than 3 days of absence when enrolled in a 6 week program without prior consent of Academy Administration. Two tardies equal one ½ day absence. It is very important that your student be on time and available for the full session to be successful at such an accelerated pace.

Each day in the STEM Enrichment Academy is the equivalent of one week of instruction in the regular school year.  Students who miss class are not likely to be successful in the program.

HOW CAN I GET A COPY OF MY GRADE REPORT?
A grade report will be mailed out at the end of the end of the Academy to the families of all enrolled students.

HOW DO I ORDER ADDITIONAL COPIES OF MY TRANSCRIPT?
If you are applying to multiple colleges you have two ways of getting additional transcripts.

  1. Order your transcripts at www.parchment.com by signing up with them to send your official transcripts electronically to over 8,000 destinations worldwide. Once you have signed up, you can sign in 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to send and track your transcript. DPIE student transcripts are issued by Dublin High School therefore you will look for and select Dublin High School when requesting a copy.  Parchment charges a fee per transcript.
  2. Go to the Dublin High School website and download a transcript request form found under the "resources" pull down and send it to Dublin High School ℅ Lenni Velez. To find the form, go to the DHS website, click on resources, Form Directory, Student forms and you can print out the form from there, complete it and send it to DHS. There is a $5 fee charged by the school for each additional transcript and checks should be made out to Dublin High School.

HOW CAN I MONITOR MY CHILD’S PERFORMANCE IN THE CLASS?

This summer, the DPIE Academy will create an online parent portal so they will be able to monitor their student’s course progress at any time during the six-week program. Additionally, each teacher will have an email address for you to address questions directly to the instructor.

MAY WE TAKE MORE THAN ONE CLASS AT A TIME THROUGH DPIE STEM ENRICHMENT ACADEMY?
High school students will only have the time to take one year-long course in our summer program.

Middle school students may sign-up for two semester courses during each three week session. There are two three-week sessions in which middle school students can enroll, (Session 1, June 5 – 22 & Session 2, June 25 – July 13).

Middle School students can sign-up for 2 three week courses in both session 1 & 2. Middle school course will be offered from 8 – 10:20 a.m. & 10:40 a.m. – 1 p.m.
