We are delighted to offer a variety of STEAM classes for our summer elementary program this year.  Below are details of our classes that we are offering at Dublin Elementary.  We have some 3 week classes and then classes that are specifically offered in weeks 1, 2 and 3.  Please select your preferred week to see courses available.

Get ready to star in your very own play! In this exciting three-week theater program, our students will write, rehearse and perform in three brand-new plays! Through a fun and exciting series of theater games, acting classes and writing workshops, we’ll learn all about using our voice, body and imagination to create characters and discover scenes. Then, we’ll explore interesting themes such as “Life as a kid”, “Growing up”, or “Fantastic Adventures” and learn how to write our own amazing scenes and monologues to be included in the play. Finally, we’ll rehearse the play and perform it for an invited audience of friends, fans and family members! During each week of the program, we’ll create and perform another brand-new play, so you can take our program for just one week, two or all three!

Challenge Island - Fort Island©

Week 1

In this one-of-a-kind enrichment course students will ride their balloon bus into an unforgettable computer-and-violence-free adventure inspired by the world’s most popular game - FortNite. Students will travel to a unique “island” where they will work in collaborative “tribes” to tackle various challenges using critical thinking, a variety of materials in their treasure chest and their boundless imaginations to build walls, stairs and other shelters as they create possible solutions to their challenge for the success of their “tribe”.  They will land in Slanted Towers, Treasure Lake and other Fort Island hotspots. Students will also design their own skins, practice their favorite dance moves, and make up some brand-new dances of their own. This Challenge Island Camp Royale promises to be a Slurp-Juicy non-electronics experience for every Fort-loving boy and girl!

It’s Storytime: Let’s Write and Type a Story!

Week 1

In this course, students will work on their narrative writing skills. Students will get guided instruction through the writing process which will culminate with a typed piece. In this case, the publishing will be in the form of typing. Additionally, students will work on their typing skills. It will focus on helping students learn the proper techniques for typing so that they can move away from pecking at the keys. Additionally, students will learn how to properly set up a document for typing. Ensuring that we focus on proper spacing before and after punctuation. This course will allow students to become quicker at typing which will allow them to produce written work at a faster pace. This will also help prepare students for SBAC testing. If time permits, students will take a narrative writing piece and create a storyboard which they can then code using Scratch or Scratch Jr. ”

Reader’s Theater

Step into the world of Reader’s Theater as we bring stories to life!  This course will encourage students to read with expression and to practice important fluency attributes, such as pause, inflection, and intonation.  During this course students will explore character roles which will assist in helping students comprehend important literary elements. Readers Theater provides beneficial strategies for improving listening skills, collaboration with peers and self-confidence. Through the Reader’s Theater process students will recognize productive positive attitudes and work habits in the classroom which can be applied indefinitely! We incorporate the art of public speaking skills which sets the stage for success in life!

Enter the exciting world of chess! This camp is designed to bring a challenge to all players, from beginner to expert. To advance through our leveled curriculum, campers learn new tactics progressively: from skewers to endgames and far beyond. Higher level campers will work towards playing chess blindfolded! Other challenges include Bug House (team chess), computer simulations, and a tournament at the end of the camp. Pieces, boards, and prizes are all provided. Our professional chess educators will help everyone achieve “Success Through Chess!"

Writing Development: Songs, Poems and Stories! Oh My!

Is writing your favorite thing to do? Does your student love words and playing with rhythms and rhyme? Do they find joy in telling stories and sharing their thoughts? This is a course for them! Writing is not confined to essays and informational writing, sometimes you have to let your creative juices flow. By writing with creativity students can find themselves through songs, poetry, stories and plays. Throughout this course students will develop their creative writing skills. They will learn strategies to strengthen their writing skills and help their ideas come to life on the page. Students will create poems, short stories, skits and other written formats throughout the course. I am thrilled to see these students open their minds and share their tales! This is course is sure to be a literary adventure!

Students will virtually travel the world learning about some of its most famous landmarks using art, technology, and engineering. Along the way, they will be creating works of art about all of the places they visit using a variety of art mediums such as pastels and paints. As they record their travels, the students will learn about perspective, line, and color in art. They will then work in collaborative groups to build these landmarks as souvenirs of their travels. Within their work, students use their skills from across subjects to build a deeper understanding of their abilities and ways to express their ideas.

A magical week of spellbinding adventure has been brewed up for students in this course! Students will travel on a unique “island” adventure where they will work collaboratively with their “STEAMwarts Housemates” to tackle various challenges using a variety of materials in their provided treasure chest and their boundless imaginations. STEAMwarts Housemates will take a full load of Wizarding Classes from Transfiguration to Flying Broomsticks to Charms and Potions to Magical Beasts where they will explore science. The camp will culminate with a graduation ceremony before you sail your enchanted boats back to the Muggle World.

Video Game Design & Coding

Prepare for the world of technology and learn the secret language of computers! Coders will discover how computers think through fun interactive games and basic computer coding. After mastering the processing style of a computer, coders will learn to use Scratch, a block-based tool developed at MIT. Use Scratch to make engaging projects with endless possibilities, in a mixture of games and stories. Choose your favorite theme, from Luke in Star Wars to the voyager Moana! Students will also take time to step away from the screen and engage in “unplugged” activities like Robot Artist or Paper Plane Coding to deepen their computational thinking skills. Finally, coders also get to take part in 3D game design! Learn the complex methods used to take your game design to the next dimension!"

In this class, the students will learn there is more to sports than being able to kick or throw a ball. By connecting math and science to the games we love, students will build a better understanding of the sports they enjoy playing. Each day will focus on one sport. We will learn about the math involved in making players more successful and the science behind the sport. The children will have the opportunity to try out their new learning in a friendly game that focuses on sportsmanship and having fun. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite team gear throughout the week.
