Time:                    3:05 - 4:15 pm
Tuition:               $185

Course Description: In this Math Challenge class, students will practice math skills and learn new problem solving skills through hands-on games and activities and the use of technology. Most of the tasks will be open-ended. Students will be presented with a problem and will search for constructive ways of finding solutions. This might be through engineering as students construct a plan to solve a problem. It might be through drawing as they design their solutions. The tasks will be completed through the use of technology, teamwork, and thinking outside the box.

As students seek answers to challenging math problems and open-ended questions, we will connect their learning through natural exploration to traditional math and algebraic equations. For example, one concept that is often challenging for students is working with positive and negative numbers. We will look at hands-on ways for students to develop a deeper understanding of this often abstract concept. After exploring and discussing this concept, we will then look at traditional algorithms (for example: -5+3=n) and look at ways to connect students hands-on exploration to the algorithms. When students learn concepts (even challenging ones) in an engaging and interactive way, the concepts make sense to them and are more meaningful.    Come join our brave new world of math challenge activities!
