It’s laughter, learning and limelight with the After School Drama Club’s The Actor’s Workshop! Through a fun series of theater games, acting exercises and scripted scene work, this introductory acting class teaches the fundamentals of the actor’s craft. Students explore the “three tools of the actor” – voice, body and imagination – as they learn how to create characters, interpret scripts and perform for an audience. The class teaches true theater skills such as stagecraft, emotionally truthful acting, and professional theater etiquette, while encouraging creativity and inspiring the imagination. The class culminates with a free workshop presentation of scenes and monologues for an invited audience.

Learn chess with Pacific Chess Academy!  This program is a great opportunity for kids to learn how to overcome obstacles, think strategically, and stay focused. Specifically designed for young players with various levels (Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced), the course offers video lessons, easy-to-follow instructions, individual recommendations, and preparation to chess tournaments. The use of the modern technology (projectors, iPad, teaching software) makes the learning process easy, fast, and fun! All necessary equipment (boards and pieces, clocks, demo tools) provided. Participants receive certificates and trophies at the end of the school year. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a Chess Champion, this class is for students at all ability levels.

Code to the Future & Robotics

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced coding student, this class will work for you. Students will be able to work at their own pace. The class will blend step by step lessons in coding with fun, hands-on, "unplugged" activities. With an emphasis on developing computational thinking, students will learn about algorithms, debugging, loops, conditionals, binary coding and more. Working individually, in pairs and in teams, students will be introduced to coding using a block-based online coding program. The more advanced students will begin to work with Javascript using other online coding programs. In addition, students will have the opportunity to program Ollie robots and will learn to build and program LEGO robotic sets using basic engineering techniques and coding. Problem solving, persistence and teamwork will be emphasized.

Contemporary Dance for Kids

Contemporary as a dance style is a fusion of ballet, jazz, funk, and modern dance styles.  Contemporary dance encourages natural, spontaneous movement and focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use, safe body alignment and strong use of Modern Dance technique. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up focusing on improving flexibility, extension, core strength, and balance and gradually build up to contemporary steps and combinations that will consist of abstract movements combining modern and classical ballet elements. Students will learn how to express a wide range of emotions through their dance based on musical interpretation and individual style and using the contemporary dance form as a platform for creative self-expression. Classes emphasize technique, fundamentals and a familiarization of the dance vocabulary.

Recommended Dress - Students must be able to move and stretch fully.  Footless tights, leggings, leotards, fitted dance shorts, fitted tops, t-shirts and athletic pants are ideal.  Medium or long hair pulled away from face in pony-tail, braid, or bun. No shoes, bare-feet.

Designing and Building Roller Coasters

The car raises up the track, echoing clank, clank, clank as it slowly moves up in by in to its final destination.  When it reaches that destination it starts its descent picking up speed sending shrills and shrieks of fear and joy to the captive passengers in the cars!  Speeding down a roller coaster is something most people looking for a slight taste of danger, but in a controlled manner, have done.  Roller coasters are an adventure but for these adventures they have to be carefully designed, and this is where engineers come in.  Engineers create these machines ensuring they are fun and safe. We can’t make everyone into an engineer yet but what we can do is let everyone experience what engineers do.  For this class we will be creating paper roller coasters.  The student’s basics behind how a roller coaster’s design and mechanics.   

Mystical, Mythical and Magical Art

Mermaids, Unicorns, Dragon Eggs, Magical Wands… we will explore it all in this multi-media art class.  We will work with all different types of materials including oil pastel, watercolor, fused glass, clay, sharpies, markers and maybe even some glitter to create some fun magical art.  Projects include building a castle and a magic want out of clay, creating your own watercolor dragon, and students will be able to choose between creating a unicorn, mermaid or dragon as their ceramic piece. Join us in this magical exploration through art.

This is an excellent course that reinforces presentation skills. Kids not only learn how to write creatively but also learn how to think critically and impact an audience effectively. Students begin to conduct research on more current issues, deliver descriptive & expository speeches, and make powerful presentations with the use of Power Point, Charts, Diagrams and other Audio/Visual Aids. This course will help kids expand their general knowledge and formulate their thoughts with a clear and concise structure.

Our goal is to develop well-rounded individuals… and to give kids with any level of prior knowledge a HANDS ON experience in each class!!

Effective writing is one of the main sought after talents in the world and yet to write well is one of the most demanding forms of communication. Through this session of Writing Through the Genres, students will learn how to deliver messages with impact. Students will work on a variety of styles including opinion/ persuasive & argumentative writing. This session will help students learn how to clearly communicate their opinions, research data to strengthen support those opinions  and how to make counter arguments of others. We will also focus on claims, evidence, and reasoning as well as the technical parts of writing such as sentence form and grammar.

Participants will:

 

  1. Engage in learning activities that give them positive their confidence with writing;
  2. Develop strong grammatical skills
  3. Utilize technology to self-publish their works
  4. Become equipped with the tools to organize his or her ideas

This Yoga class for kids will explore the role of the Chakras in our yoga practice. Chakras are the 7 spinning wheels of energy located along the spine. Each Chakra has a color of the rainbow associated with it and a place it resides along the center of the body. Our Chakras are associated with our mental and emotional well-being. When our Chakras are balanced, we feel comfortable, confident and in charge of our own emotions. We will use mindful movement and breath to awaken our awareness of these energy centers. Understanding the superpowers of energy centers gives us the tools to understand ourselves better and empowers us to lead a balanced, peaceful life.

If so, the Engineering Challenges class is just what your child needs.  In this hands-on program, your child will be given different STEM challenges to complete individually and in groups. This is a great way for your child to learn to work with others and overcome different challenges. Students will use a variety of materials to build towers, boats, vehicles and more.

Fasten your seatbelts; we're in for some wild weather! This unit is all about the amazing and powerful forces of nature, as students explore the when, where, how and why of all kinds of natural phenomenon. These lessons are designed to improve your child's understanding of the forces of nature, while taking care not to alarm. Each LEGO® model represents the motion of that particular weather or event, with a seat for a mini-figure to take in the action! Take cover because we're about to take a trip through some wild weather! Kids will love to build moving models of a tornado, a tsunami, an earthquake and a cyclone using Bricks 4 Kidz proprietary instructions and LEGO® Bricks!  Learn how they move, why they happen and what you can do to stay safe!

This is a hands-on class where students build machines, buildings, vehicles and other structures out of LEGO® bricks, using one-of-a-kind model plans designed by Bricks 4 Kidz.  While exploring principles of engineering, architecture, physics and more, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Participants build a new project each week. Each class begins with a teacher-led discussion related to the day’s model. Once the project is completed, children use the rest of their time to expand their gadgets and collaborate with one another.

What do you want to be when you grow up?  On this adventure students will travel to Cool Careers Island© where they will get a taste of some of the world’s most exciting jobs from veterinarian to marine biologist to professional basketball player!  Students are faced with a captivating challenge as they travel to this unique “island” and work collaboratively in “tribes” using the Scientific Method to think critically about possible solutions to their challenge for the success of their “tribe”. Using a variety of materials in their provided treasure chest and their boundless imaginations students will plan, design and create something special, free of technology, that fulfills the “islands” challenge requirements while giving them the freedom to drive their own learning outcome.
In this course students are provided with an enriched, fun-filled experience that develops lifelong learners and problem solvers.
